Dal 12 aprile al 15 luglio 2018 FM Centro per l’Arte Contemporanea presenta The Szechwan Tale. China, Theater and History (Cina, Teatro e Storia), una nuova grande mostra a cura di Marco Scotini – direttore artistico di FM – che si rivolge al contesto cinese, proseguendo la linea d’indagine tracciata con le mostre Non-Aligned Modernity, dedicata all’arte dell’Est Europa, e Il Cacciatore Bianco/The White Hunter, sull’arte africana.
The Szechwan Tale. China, Theater and History inaugura il 12 aprile 2018, durante la Milano Art Week, in concomitanza con miart, la fiera internazionale d’arte moderna e contemporanea di Milano.
La mostra ripercorre la storia delle relazioni tra Oriente e Occidente attraverso i grandi temi del Teatro e della Storia, trattando questi argomenti all’interno di un percorso espositivo unico, concepito come un meta-teatro in cui più di trenta di artisti internazionali e cinesi forniscono una decostruzione degli strumenti della macchina teatrale – il pubblico, il sipario, l’attore (l’automa, il puppet, il teatro delle ombre), i costumi e la scenografia (ambiente mutabile e immutabile), il testo e la musica – come metafora di altrettanti fenomeni sociali e del loro carattere storico.
La mostra è una evoluzione del progetto che il curatore Marco Scotini ha realizzato ad Anren, antica città del Sichuan in Cina, all'interno della prima Biennale di Anren (ottobre 2017 – febbraio 2018), intitolata Today’s Yesterday, con l'aggiunta di ulteriori artisti cinesi di fama internazionale. Le opere d'arte in mostra spaziano dalla pittura alla fotografia, dall'installazione ai video e ai film/documentari e provengono da prestigiose collezioni private.
Il titolo della mostra è un riferimento all'opera teatrale The Good Person of Szechwan (L'anima buona del Sezuan) di Bertolt Brecht del 1938, messa in scena a Milano al Piccolo Teatro da Strehler nel 1957-58. Altra figura importante per la mostra è Mei Lanfang (1894-1961), uno dei più importanti attori della storia del teatro cinese moderno, che ha influenzato il teatro d'avanguardia russo e poi tedesco. Non mancano i riferimenti all’opera lirica, con la presenza in mostra del costume della soprano Gina Cigna, indossato negli anni ’30 per la Turandot di Puccini al Teatro alla Scala.

From April 12 until July 15, 2018, FM Centre for Contemporary Art present The Szechwan Tale. China, Theatre and History, a new large-scale exhibition curated by Marco Scotini – artistic director of FM Centre – focused on the Chinese context, following the line of research set with the latest exhibitions Non-Aligned Modernity, focused on Eastern European Art, and The White Hunter, on African Art.
The Szechwan Tale. China, Theatre and History will open on April 12, 2018, during the Milan Art Week and miart, the International Modern and Contemporary Art Fair of Milan.
The exhibition is tracing the relationship between East and West around the grand themes of Theater and History, covering these subjects within a sort of meta-theatre in which more than thirty international and Chinese artists provide a deconstruction of the tools of the theatric machine – such as: the audience, the curtain, the actors (the automaton, the puppet, the shadow theater), the costumes and the backdrops (a changing and unchanging environment), the text and the music – as metaphors of an equal number of social phenomena and of their historic nature.

The exhibition is an evolution of the project that the curator Marco Scotini realized in Anren, Sichuan (China), at the first Anren Biennale (28 October 2017 – February 2018), titled Today’s Yesterday, with the addition of other internationally renown Chinese artists. Original artworks included will range from painting to photography, installation to video and documentaries, coming from prestigious private collections.
The title of the exhibition is a reference to the theatrical work by Bertolt Brecht The Good Person of Szechwan (Der gute Mensch von Sezuan) written in 1938-1941, also staged by Giorgio Strehler at the Piccolo Teatro in Milan in 1957-58. The figure of Mei Lanfang (1894-1961), one of the most famous Peking Opera artists, which influenced Russian and German avant-garde theater will be central to the exhibition. Other references include the opera, with the lavish costume that the soprano Gina Cigna worn in the '30s for Puccini's Turandot at the Teatro alla Scala.
