Cardi Gallery London presenta MY LIFE IN FLUX: una mostra senza precedenti che esamina l’esperienza di Fluxus attraverso la lente di Gino di Maggio e Francesco Conz, due personalità differenti, ma entrambe nel cuore di diverse fasi dello sviluppo di Fluxus. Di Maggio, famoso attivista politico e “compagno di viaggio” di molti artisti, era impegnato nella promozione del neonato movimento e delle sue successive fasi sia in Europa che in America. Conz era invece un editore, collezionista e produttore che lavorava a stretto contatto con gli artisti d’avanguardia. Dal 1972 e per più di trent’anni fu anche uno dei più prolifici editori delle edizioni Fluxus, con legami profondi con Maciunas & Co.

MY LIFE IN FLUX riunisce oltre 80 opere realizzate tra il 1955 e il 2006, molte delle quali mai viste prima in Gran Bretagna. La mostra, inoltre, include numerose edizioni multimediali che rappresentano l’ampia gamma di materiali utilizzati dagli artisti di Fluxus. I curatori, Gigiotto del Vecchio e Davide di Maggio, hanno selezionato opere chiave realizzate da 37 artisti, compresi i principali attori di Fluxus insieme a compositori e artisti visuali che hanno influenzato le pratiche degli artisti del movimento e di quelli che a esso si sono ispirati. La mostra presenta pezzi di Conz, Di Maggio e altre collezioni private, giustapponendoli vivacemente con quelli dell’Archivio Gualco.

Molti artisti di Fluxus hanno lavorato su una grande varietà di media, da pittura e scultura a format meno tradizionali come performance, video, poesia e musica sperimentale. Sulla scia di una nuova interpretazione di Dada, del lavoro di altri esponenti dell’Arte Concettuale come Marcel Duchamp e John Cage e dell’estetica minimalista tipica degli anni Sessanta, gli artisti di Fluxus si sono rivolti a gesti espansivi e rivoluzionari, a esperienze collettive basate su sviluppi sociologici, filosofici e tecnologici, con l’obiettivo di cambiare la percezione politica, sociale ed estetica.

Gli artisti di Fluxus condividevano una visione radicale del mercato dell’arte e del suo elitarismo: non vollero mai, né immaginarono, di posizionarsi all’interno delle dinamiche capitalistiche del mercato dell’arte; cercarono invece di esprimere le loro idee impegnandosi in un’alternativa parallela all'industria dell'arte mainstream che si stava formando in quegli anni.

“La cosa più importante di Fluxus è che nessuno sa cosa sia” disse Robert Watts. In effetti, ridurre Fluxus a un movimento artistico è fin troppo limitante: può essere meglio definito come un “atteggiamento verso l’arte”. Nelle parole del suo padre fondatore, George Maciunas, “Fluxus-art-fun dovrebbe essere semplice, divertente e poco impegnativo, dovrebbe riguardare cose insignificanti, non dovrebbe richiedere abilità speciali e innumerevoli prove…”

Cardi Gallery London is proud to present MY LIFE IN FLUX. This unprecedented exhibition examines the experience of Fluxus through the lens of Gino di Maggio and Francesco Conz. Two very different individuals, both were at the very heart of different phases within the development of Fluxus. Di Maggio, a well-known political activist and a “fellow traveller” of many artists, was engaged in promoting the early birth of the movement and its subsequent phases both in Europe and America. Conz was a publisher, collector and producer working closely with avantgarde artists. Since 1972 and for over thirty years, he was also one of the most prolific publishers of Fluxus editions, with deep ties to Maciunas & Co.

MY LIFE IN FLUX brings together over 80 artworks ranging in date between 1955 and 2006, many of which have never been seen before in the U.K.. The exhibition also includes several multimedia editions that represent the broad range of materials Fluxus artists embraced. Curators Gigiotto del Vecchio and Davide di Maggio have selected key works by 37 artists, including the major players within Fluxus alongside composers and visual artists that influenced the practices of Fluxus artists and artists inspired by the movement. The exhibition features pieces from the Conz, Di Maggio and other private collections, playfully juxtaposing them with those from Archivio Gualco.

Many Fluxus artists worked in collaboration across a wide variety of media, from painting and sculpture to less traditional formats such as performance, video, poetry and experimental music. In the wake of a new interpretation of Dada and other Conceptual Art practitioners such as Marcel Duchamp and John Cage and the minimalist aesthetic typical of the 1960’s, Fluxus artists turned to expansive, revolutionary gestures, to collective experiences based on sociological, philosophical and technological developments. The Fluxus artist’s aim was to change political, social and aesthetic perception.

Fluxus artists shared a radical view of the art market and its elitism. They never wanted nor even imagined to position themselves within art market’s capitalist dynamics. Instead, they sought to express their ideas by engaging in a parallel alternative to the mainstream art industry that was being shaped in those years.

“The most important thing about Fluxus is that nobody knows what it is” said Robert Watts. Indeed, reducing Fluxus to an art ‘movement’ is too limiting; it may better be defined as an attitude toward art making. In the words of its founding father, George Maciunas, "Fluxus-art-fun should just be simple, entertaining and undemanding, it should be about insignificant things, it shouldn't require special skills and countless rehearsals..."
